r.b.richter Now Showing at Silhouette and Mingo

Two new shows up, running through January and February–showing very different work between the two locations.  At Silhouette, you can see the focus is figurative and somewhat expressionist–both paintings and drawings.  At Mingo Restaurant at “the Round” in Beaverton, OR  (more info coming) you’ll find the focus is on variously surreal landscapes, with over 20 works on display.

For openings, first up is at Silhouette Custom Tailoring, 4225 NE Fremont St., Portland, OR 97213, in the heart of Portland’s Beaumont Village.  Stop by Wednesday, January 23rd between 4 and 8 pm during the nieghborhood’s Shop the Block event (special deals in stores–on my work too).

A little about Silhouette:

New Exhibitions Coming in January 2013

Two exhibitions happening January 2013, one at Mingo Restaurant in Beaverton, OR, the other at Cloth & Canvas in Portland, OR.  At Mingo, I’ll be showing a mix of new and old work–including selections from my long-running painting series exploring life’s journey through evocative and surreal images on wood panels.  Cloth and Canvas will be featuring a selection of older, more expressionistic and figural works on canvas and paper.

Another reason to visit Mingo:  a new menu.  And the atmosphere remains a nice balance of classy and comfy:  at the Beaverton Round, by the MAX stop on SW Hall Blvd.  Extremely convenient for 24 Hour Fitness members, btw!

Cloth and Canvas is an excuse to visit Portland’s beautiful Beaumont Village neighborhood:  4225 NE Fremont St., Portland.  After seeing the art, check out the beautiful residential neighborhood!

Local Paper Artist Sine Morse Showing at Suzette

Recently, I got a wonderful surprise in my inbox:  an invitation to Sine Morse’s opening at Suzette Creperie (through November) in Portland’s charming SE Belmont neighborhood.  Having encountered her and her bright and delightful work a few times in the past couple years, I was jazzed!

So, over the hills and into the wilds of SE Portland to check it out.  And it was well worth it!  Beyond how sweet a person she is (so far, a remarkably common trait among the local artists whom I’ve met), the show looked good:  she’s got the whole space and has a wide variety of subjects and prices on the walls.

Her work consists of colorful cut paper shadow boxes, often with painted elements and occasional bead accents.  And they all share a bright, optimistic, often fanciful, sensibility. Beautifully decorative and imaginative and often very intricate.  If you’re followers of Sticky Stuff Stew blog, you may remember the image I put up from my first encounter with this fellow emerging local artist.

Given her comments at my opening last night, I suspect an art trade in the not-too distant future as I would love to see one of her works on our walls!

r.b.richter Opening at Sidecar 11 a Great Success

OK, folks:  popped my Portland exhibition cherry last night at Sidecar 11!  And, despite the bad case of nerves preceding, it went swimmingly (especially after the first cocktail…)!  Excellent turnout–many thanks to all who showed!  It really meant a lot to me.  Those who RSVPed got a little something extra:  a “cozy” (real-estate speak for “tiny”) print of a new original design incorporating an original linoleum cut.

The combination of bright, engaging guests and our great hosts at Sidecar (John and Aaron)–and the excellent victuals–made for a wonderful and stimulating evening.  Wine tasting by local micro-winemaker Jan-Marc Wine Cellars (lovely balanced flavors, btw) didn’t hurt, either.  Thanks especially to the artists who showed up (delightful people all):  Sine Morse (see next post), Mike Trapp and Mike Brown.  And many thanks to my rep., Jeffrey T. Howard.

One thing I especially appreciated was the careful attention paid to, not just the 3 big paintings on the walls, but my portfolio of selected works in painting, illustration, printmaking and drawings.  Feedback was gratifying.  And it didn’t hurt that we sold a number of greeting card sets!

r.b.richter (ME!) Making Artwork Debut in Portland, Right Now

I’m showing my work in Portland, OR, for the very first time–my debut, if you will.  And, it’s expected to be just the beginning, as we’re lining up more local venues for the coming months.

And those months should be interesting, as I will be showing a wide variety of my work executed over the long stretch of time when I was holed up in my studio producing, but not “getting out there.”  For example, here, we’re starting with a trio of older pieces, part of a small series of large-scale un-stretched  expressionist canvases meant to hang tapestry style.  Though they look quite different from my current work, a discerning eye will see the roots of my artist’s philosophy.  Given their size–the size of a doorway–and subject matter (mostly male nudes), this series tends to be a bit less…subtle…than newer work in their reach to make a connection or elicit a gut reaction.  As in my current work though, they are meant to encourage you to bring your own life experience to them, and discover something about yourself through your reaction.

Now showing through November at Sidecar 11 Bar, 3955 N. Mississippi Ave. in Portland historic and trendy N. Mississippi neighborhood.

And for added enticement to stop by and check it out:  there are two other artists showing:  wood carved shadow boxes and photography (variety is the spice of life!), and Sidecar just happens to do free wine tasting on Tuesdays!  In fact, we’ll be there Tuesday, Nov. 13 around 5pm.  Stop by and say hi!

Lea Keohane at Attic Gallery

Recently I stopped by Portland’s Attic Gallery–one of my favorites thanks to its eclectic and accessible variety of artists and artwork on hand.  And, I got a great surprise:  painter Lea Keohane is showing there!  If you’ve never seen her work, it’s worth stopping by.

She strikes a careful balance in her work between whimsy and haunting, rough and outrageously delicate, formal and informal, abstract and figural.  The control she exercises over her media aren’t obvious on this image without enlarging it:  much of the work allows the wood surface to show through–which means:  no room for error!  Like working without a net which, in her case, adds a subtle air of bravura to seemingly delicate pieces.  And, the extreme care–obsessiveness, even–of the trademark dot patterns she frequently uses, contrasting with the sweet, idyllic subject matter, adds another subtle tension.

A real balancing act, carefully and subtly presented!

HeartSign Painting Becomes New Series

Perhaps you remember this painting I did for the Molalla Art, Wine & Chocolate Festival?

Almost immediately, I decided I liked the fundamental icon (a variously battered heart-shaped billboard structure), and the painting style and approach that the first painting insisted upon.  So, I decided to do a trilogy mini-series, and am working on the second one right now.  But, the other day while jogging, it sort of exploded in my head:  another 5 or 6 ideas down on paper now.  Hopefully I’ll get to them–a lot of other work in-progress at the moment, too..  Kinda depends on what YOU all think of the first three!

Is It Finishing, Or Is It Beginning?

I usually get sucked into articles on organizing and de-cluttering.  Perhaps a reaction to my father and mother, both of whom often didn’t quite finish a lot of things.  And tended to hang on to a lot of…stuff.  Not hoarders, and not un-productive–just busy and on to other things.

And I’ve got my own tendencies to both.  How about you?

But this article really speaks to me right now–as an artist.  You see, I’ve come to realize that much of my artwork isn’t truly finished.  I mean:  the pieces are artistically complete, but…  They’re not finalized for presentation, documented, titled, or even signed!

Now, I find myself spending a lot of time on a lot of old work, slogging through this necessary process of completion–not just for me, but really more out of respect for my buyers.  Feels good actually.  And, thanks to my commitment to increasing professionalism in my practice, I’ve got procedures to refer to–a checklist, if you will–and when new stuff is done, it really is done, and ready to share with the world.  Yay!

Check out this article–especially if you find you’ve got…a few…unfinished projects or abandoned interests lying about…  Finishing stuff might be more of a beginning than an ending.

Making Progress! And…An Exhibition?

Ah, one of these days, I’m looking forward to getting back into the studio and away from the computer!!! But, I am making progress on the not-as-enjoyable-as-making-art nuts and bolts stuff. Thanks for your patience and assistance!

Also, it looks like there may be an opportunity coming up to see some of my work up on some walls out there in the world. I’ll let you know when the details are tied down!
